Then he touched their eyes and said, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.” And their eyes were opened. Jesus warned them sternly, “See that no one knows about this.” But they went out and spread word of him through all that land.
Often, it is
our love affair with this world. When we are too attached to worldly things, we
become overly concerned about how we look in the eyes of others. We worry too
much about the external impressions people have of us. We become fixated on chasing material wealth, power, status,
and other worldly attachments. Slowly and almost unnoticed, these things cloud
our vision and lead us into spiritual blindness.
In the Gospel, we encounter two men who are physically blind but spiritually insightful. Though they could not see with their eyes, they recognized the presence of Jesus as He passed by. With unwavering faith and deep longing, they cried out, “Son of David, have pity on us!” Their hearts saw what their eyes could not—and Jesus did not disappoint them.
This Gospel scene invites us to reflect on our own lives. We must be careful not to allow this world to rob us of our spiritual vision, for it is through spiritual sight that we discover the true essence and meaning of life. Life is not about earthly riches, influence, or achievements. What good are wealth and power if our hearts are empty of Jesus?
The moment we decide to follow Jesus faithfully, our spiritual blindness begins to heal. We start to see differently—very differently from how we once saw. We come to realize that nothing in this world truly matters except the love and light of Christ shining in our lives and guiding our paths.
Jesus Himself assures us: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life” (John 8:12).
As we reflect on these words, let us ask ourselves with sincerity and courage: Are we willing to let go of whatever blinds us and cry out to Jesus with faith, so that we may see clearly and walk in His light today and always? – Marino J. Dasmarinas
