Reflection for September 4 Friday of the Twenty-second Week in Ordinary Time: Luke 5:33-39

Gospel: Luke 5:33-39

The scribes and Pharisees said to Jesus, “The disciples of John the Baptist fast often and offer prayers, and the disciples of the Pharisees do the same; but yours eat and drink.” Jesus answered them, “Can you make the wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them?  

But the days will come, and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” And he also told them a parable. “No one tears a piece from a new cloak to patch an old one. Otherwise, he will tear the new and the piece from it will not match the old cloak.  

Likewise, no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be ruined. Rather, new wine must be poured into fresh wineskins. And no one who has been drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’”

Reflection:

The story is told of a lady who shared her personal testimony about how Jesus made a profound impact on her life and filled it with joy and contentment. She said that now that Jesus is in her heart, she knows where to turn whenever sadness, worries, and trials come her way. Instead of allowing these burdens to overwhelm her, she brings them to Jesus and trusts Him to take care of them.

Whether we admit it or not, sadness, loneliness, disappointments, and other painful emotions will visit us from time to time. This is especially true when life becomes difficult and many of us experience suffering in different ways. We cannot escape the realities of life because we are human beings with emotions. There will be moments when our hearts grow weary, when our tears fall silently, and when we wonder how we can continue.

But this is where our faith in Jesus becomes our source of strength and hope.

When Jesus is truly present in our lives, we may still experience sadness, but we do not have to face it alone. We may go through trials, but we do not have to carry them by ourselves. We may shed tears, but we can shed them in the presence of the One who understands the deepest cries of our hearts. Jesus does not promise that we will never experience pain, but He assures us that He will never abandon us in the midst of our pain.

Because Jesus is with us, we can continue moving forward with hope. When our strength is failing, His grace sustains us. When our hearts are troubled, His presence gives us peace. When we feel lost, He gently reminds us that we are never alone. And when the burdens of life seem too heavy for us to carry, we can place them into His loving hands and trust Him to carry us through.

Our sadness may come, but it does not have to define us. Our trials may hurt us, but they do not have to defeat us. Even the darkest and saddest moments of our lives cannot have the final victory over us, because in Jesus, we are continually being renewed. We are being transformed into something new—a life strengthened by His grace, purified by His love, and sustained by His presence.

Let us therefore not be afraid of the difficult emotions and trials that come our way. Instead, let us bring them to Jesus. Let us allow Him to enter the places in our hearts where we hurt the most. Let us trust Him not only when everything is going well, but especially when life becomes painful and uncertain.

For the heart that truly welcomes Jesus may still experience sorrow, but it will never be without hope; it may still face storms, but it will never be without a Savior.

When sadness, loneliness, or trials come knocking at the door of our hearts, will we allow them to overwhelm us—or will we open our hearts to Jesus, surrender our burdens to Him, and trust Him to lead us through the storm?—Marino J. Dasmarinas
