At the judgment the queen of the south will rise with the men of this generation and she will condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and there is something greater than Solomon here.
At the judgment the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because at the preaching of Jonah they repented, and there is something greater than Jonah here.”
For example, if someone is courting us, would we ask God for a sign to determine whether that person is the right one for us? And based on that sign, would we decide whether to say yes or no to that person?
Jesus
is far greater than any sign we may ask God to give us. When we have Jesus in
our hearts and trust in His wisdom, we learn to discern His will without
constantly asking for signs. But do we truly allow Jesus to have a special
place in our hearts? Jesus desires to dwell within us, to guide our decisions,
transform our hearts, and lead us closer to God.
To
prepare ourselves for His presence, we must repent of our sins, turn away from
our sinful ways, and return to Him with sincere and humble hearts. Repentance
opens our hearts to God's transforming grace and allows His love to work within
us.
During
the time of Jonah, the people of Nineveh listened to his call to repentance.
They were warned that destruction would come upon them if they refused to change
their ways. In response, they humbled themselves, put on sackcloth as a sign of
their sorrow for their sins, and turned away from their sinful ways.
They
recognized their need for God's mercy and responded with sincere repentance.
Their example reminds us that when God calls us to change our lives, we must
not harden our hearts or postpone our conversion. Instead, we must humbly
listen to His voice and courageously take the path that leads us back to Him.
Why
do we continue to embrace sin when it does us no good? Why do we cling to sin
when we know that it separates us from God and can eventually destroy our
souls? Sometimes, we continue to sin because the devil tempts us with promises
of pleasure, satisfaction, power, and worldly rewards.
These
temptations may appear attractive at first, but they can gradually enslave our
hearts and draw us away from the One who truly loves us. When we deliberately
choose sin over God, we place ourselves in danger of losing our way. We may
gain temporary pleasure from our sinful choices, but no worldly satisfaction
can replace the lasting peace and joy that come from living in God's grace.
If we love this world more than we love God, we will find it difficult to resist the temptations that lead us to sin. Yet, even when we repeatedly fall, God never ceases to call us back to Him. He does not abandon us because of our weaknesses or refuse to welcome us because of our past mistakes.
His
mercy remains available to us when we sincerely repent and seek His
forgiveness. Like a loving father welcoming a repentant child, God is always
ready to embrace us with His infinite love and compassion. We need not remain
prisoners of our sins, for His grace gives us the strength to begin again and
walk in the light of His presence.
Let
us not wait for extraordinary signs before we turn to God. Let us listen to His
voice, examine our consciences, acknowledge our sins, and humbly seek His
forgiveness. May we never become so attached to the pleasures of this world
that we lose sight of the eternal joy God desires to share with us. Every day
is another opportunity to repent, to change our ways, and to make room for
Jesus in our hearts.
If God is already calling us to repentance today, will we continue
to cling to the sins that draw us away from Him, or will we finally surrender
our hearts to His mercy, turn away from evil, and allow His transforming love
to lead us to a new life with Him?—Marino J.
