Reflection for July 24 Friday of the Sixteenth Week in Ordinary Time: Matthew 13:18-23

Gospel: Matthew 13:18-23

Jesus said to his disciples: "Hear the parable of the sower. The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the Kingdom without understanding it, and the Evil One comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy.  

But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away. The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit.  

But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold."

Reflection:

How do we respond when we encounter the Word of God?

Do we take time to pause, ponder, and allow His message to touch and transform our hearts, even for a few moments amid the busyness of our daily lives?

We recognize that we all have many responsibilities, concerns, and commitments. Yet, we must not allow the demands of life to completely draw us away from God. Amid our busy schedules, we are invited to intentionally set aside precious moments for prayer, reflection, and communion with Him. 

For when we neglect our relationship with God, we slowly risk becoming people who are controlled by the values of this world rather than guided by His loving presence.

Without God’s Word nourishing our souls, we may find ourselves becoming like seeds that are unable to grow—easily influenced by the pursuit of power, wealth, worldly success, and the desires of the flesh. 

These things may appear attractive and pleasing on the outside, but they can quietly distract us and lead our hearts away from the One who gives us true and lasting life.

Jesus calls us to become the rich soil where His Word can take deep root. He invites us not only to hear His teachings but also to understand them, embrace them, and live them faithfully. This is why God lovingly places people in our lives who help us discover Him, strengthen our faith, and guide us closer to His presence.

However, we must also examine our response to His Word. There are times when we hear God’s message but fail to pay attention. There are moments when we listen but quickly forget what He has taught us. There are also times when we remember His Word yet struggle to put it into action in our daily lives.

What Jesus desires from us is not merely to hear the Word of God but to allow it to transform who we are. When we reflect on His teachings and faithfully live them, we become like the seed sown on rich soil—seeds that bear abundant fruit and yield a hundred, sixty, or thirtyfold.

May we continually open our hearts to God’s voice and allow His Word to shape our thoughts, choices, and actions. For the Word of God is not meant to remain only in our minds; it is meant to become alive in our hearts and visible through the way we love, forgive, serve, and live.

Today, let us ask ourselves: Is God’s Word truly taking root in the soil of our hearts, or are we allowing the distractions of this world to prevent it from growing and bearing fruit in our lives? —Marino J. Dasmarinas
