Reflection for June 30 Tuesday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time: Matthew 8:23-27

Gospel: Matthew 8:23-27
As Jesus got into a boat, his disciples followed him. Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by waves; but he was asleep. They came and woke him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”

He said to them, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?” Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was great calm. The men were amazed and said, “What sort of man is this, whom even the winds and the sea obey?”

Reflection:
Do we always seek the help of Jesus whenever we pass through the storms of our lives?

While they were in the boat with Jesus, the disciples encountered a very powerful storm. The raging winds and crashing waves filled their hearts with fear. Realizing that they could not overcome the storm on their own, they cried out to Jesus, "Lord, save us! We are perishing!" (Matthew 8:25). In their moment of desperation, they turned to the only One who had the power to save them.

How many storms have we faced in our own lives? Perhaps more than we can count. Some storms come in the form of sickness, loss, disappointments, broken relationships, financial struggles, uncertainty, or overwhelming fears. Whatever storms we may encounter, let us always remember that Jesus is with us.

He never abandons His children. He is ever ready to hear our prayers, strengthen our faith, calm our anxious hearts, and safely lead us through every trial we face today and those that may still come tomorrow.

Imagine if Jesus had not been with the disciples on that fateful night. To whom could they have turned for help? No one. Left to themselves, they could all have perished in the violent storm. But Jesus was with them. His presence made all the difference. He rebuked the winds and the sea, and great calm followed.

The same Jesus is with us today. His presence in our lives is our greatest assurance, our deepest peace, and our unfailing hope. No storm is too fierce for His power, and no burden is too heavy for His loving hands. Whenever fear threatens to overwhelm us, we can confidently run to Him, knowing that He is our refuge, our strength, and our ever-present help in times of trouble.

The question is not whether storms will come—they surely will. The real question is: Where will we turn when they do? Will we rely on our own strength, or will we cry out to Jesus with complete faith and trust, believing that He is able to calm every storm and carry us safely through it?

May we never allow fear to drown out our faith. Instead, may every storm become an opportunity to draw closer to Jesus, to trust Him more deeply, and to experience the peace that only He can give.

Whatever storm we may be facing, will we place it completely into the hands of Jesus and trust Him to lead us safely through, or will we continue trying to weather the storm on our own?Marino J. Dasmarinas
