Reflection for July 4 Saturday of the Thirteenth Week in Ordinary Time: Matthew 9:14-17

Gospel: Matthew 9:14-17
The disciples of John approached Jesus and said, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast much, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them? The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast.

No one patches an old cloak with a piece of unshrunken cloth, for its fullness pulls away from the cloak and the tear gets worse. People do not put new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise the skins burst, the wine spills out, and the skins are ruined. Rather, they pour new wine into fresh wineskins, and both are preserved.”

Reflection:
Who can truly make us complete?

It is Jesus. Only He can make us whole. The possessions, achievements, and power of this world, no matter how great or impressive they may be, can never satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts. Our wealth and influence will never give us lasting peace or true fulfillment. If we allow them to take God's rightful place in our lives, they may even lead us away from Him and ultimately destroy us.

Nothing in this world can fill our longing for God because our hearts were created for Him alone. The more we cling to worldly things instead of to the Lord, the farther we drift from His loving presence. But when we choose to draw near to Jesus, we discover the joy, peace, and completeness that only He can give.

John’s disciples asked Jesus, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast much, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus answered them, “Can the wedding guests mourn as long as the bridegroom is with them?” The wedding guests represent the followers of Jesus, and the bridegroom is Jesus Himself.

Just as the guests at a wedding banquet rejoice while the bridegroom is with them, so it is with us. When we live in the presence of Jesus, our hearts are renewed, filled with joy, and made complete. We begin to leave behind our old sinful ways and everything that separates us from God. As we continue to walk with Him each day, He transforms us little by little into the people He created us to be.

We also surrender our fears about what tomorrow may bring because we know that Jesus walks with us. Even when the future is uncertain, His faithful presence gives us the courage to trust rather than to fear. In Him, our anxiety is replaced with hope, our weakness with strength, and our emptiness with the fullness of His love. What remains in our hearts is a steadfast faith in our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Today, let us honestly ask ourselves: Are we still searching for completeness in the temporary things of this world, or have we entrusted our whole lives to Jesus, the only One who can truly satisfy our hearts? May we choose each day to remain close to Him, for only in His presence do we find the fullness of life, abiding joy, and lasting peace.— Marino J. Dasmarinas
