Reflection for June 23 Tuesday of the Twelfth Week in Ordinary Time: Matthew 7:6, 12-14

Gospel: Matthew 7:6, 12-14
Jesus said to his disciples: Do not give what is holy to dogs, or throw your pearls before swine, lest they trample them underfoot, and turn and tear you to pieces. “Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. This is the Law and the Prophets.

“Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and those who enter through it are many. How narrow the gate and constricted the road that leads to life. And those who find it are few.”

Reflection:
The story is told of a boy who was neglected by his irresponsible parents. Yet amid his difficult circumstances, a kind-hearted relative noticed something special about him.

The boy was always at church, faithfully volunteering his time and attending Holy Mass. Seeing his goodness, humility, and willingness to serve, the relative offered to take care of him. Without hesitation, the boy's parents agreed.

To make a long story short, the boy went to live with his relatives, who lovingly provided for his education and other needs. In return for his free board, lodging, and schooling, he willingly helped with household chores and other responsibilities around the house. The years quickly passed, and this humble, diligent, and hardworking boy eventually became very successful.

This story reminds us that blessings often come to those who faithfully persevere in doing what is right, even when life is difficult. God sees our efforts, our sacrifices, and our quiet acts of service, even when others do not.

What is the narrow gate that Jesus wants all of us to enter? It is the narrow gate of hard work, the narrow gate of a life lived with Jesus, and the narrow gate of faithfulness to the Church that He founded. It is the path of obedience, perseverance, sacrifice, and trust in God. Though this path may not be easy, it is the path that leads to true peace, lasting fulfillment, and eternal life.

Sadly, many of us today are tempted to seek shortcuts. In our desire for success, comfort, or wealth, some may be drawn toward dishonest or sinful ways. Many of us are also hesitant to offer our time, talents, and resources in service to God and His Church.

At times, we become so occupied with our personal concerns that we neglect opportunities to serve others and deepen our relationship with the Lord. Some of us even treat Holy Mass as an option rather than a sacred privilege and encounter with Christ.

Yet Jesus continues to invite us to enter through the narrow gate. He calls us to remain faithful even when the road is difficult, to serve even when it requires sacrifice, and to trust Him even when we do not immediately see the fruits of our efforts.

Those who choose this path may be few, but they will never be forgotten by God. In His perfect time, He will reward their faithfulness and lead them to the fullness of life that only He can give.

Let us not be afraid of the narrow gate. Let us embrace it with courage, knowing that every step we take with Jesus brings us closer to God and to the true purpose and meaning of our lives.

Today, as we reflect on our own journey of faith, let us ask ourselves: Are we willing to leave behind our shortcuts, comforts, and excuses in order to follow Jesus through the narrow gate, trusting that He alone can lead us to the life our hearts have always been searching for?– Marino J.
