Reflection for July 5 Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time: Matthew 11:25-30

Gospel: Matthew 11:25-30
At that time Jesus exclaimed: “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.

All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

Reflection:
There was a man who had wealth, knowledge, and success. He believed that his own wisdom and abilities were enough, so he rarely sought God’s guidance. But when trials came, he realized that his achievements could not give him the peace his heart was longing for.

In his darkest hour, he turned to Jesus and surrendered everything to Him. He discovered that true greatness is not found in what we have, but in our trust and dependence on God.

What is the key to the heart of Jesus?

It is humility. Humility is the quiet posture of a heart that trusts Jesus as children trust their loving parents. It is the willingness to surrender everything to Him—our dreams, our plans, our strengths, our weaknesses, and even our very lives. Humility opens the door to the heart of Jesus, yet it is a treasure that is often overlooked by those who rely solely on human wisdom and understanding.

At times, we may be tempted to depend more on ourselves than on the Lord. We may rely on our knowledge, abilities, achievements, or resources, believing they are enough to accomplish what we desire. Without realizing it, we can move forward with our own plans without first seeking God's guidance, trusting in our own strength instead of His unfailing wisdom.

Yet life without God is empty and barren. We may possess wealth, power, influence, or knowledge, but if Jesus is not at the center of our lives and if we do not place our trust in Him, these things have no lasting value. Apart from God, everything this world offers is temporary and fleeting. True significance, lasting peace, and genuine fulfillment are found only in Him.

History and even our own experience remind us that many who pursued success apart from God eventually discovered that earthly achievements could never satisfy the deepest longings of the human heart.

Some allowed wealth, power, influence, or worldly wisdom to become the foundation of their lives instead of the Lord. In trusting themselves more than God, they drifted away from the One who alone gives life its true purpose and meaning.

The Lord lovingly calls each one of us to humble ourselves before Him and draw near to His presence. He invites us to lay down our pride, surrender our self-reliance, and place our complete trust in His faithful hands. He alone is our refuge, our strength, and our lasting peace. When we humble ourselves before Jesus, we discover that His heart is always open to welcome us with mercy, grace, and unfailing love.

Today, let us choose humility over pride, trust over self-reliance, and surrender over control. Let us seek our rest not in the passing promises of this world but in the loving embrace of Christ, who alone can satisfy the deepest desires of our hearts.

As we come before the Lord today, are we truly placing our complete trust in Jesus, or are we still clinging to our own wisdom, strength, and achievements? May we have the humility to surrender everything to Him, for only then will we discover the joy, peace, and fullness of life that can be found only in Him.— Marino J. Dasmarinas
