Reflection for Saturday November 12, Memorial of Saint Josaphat, Bishop and Martyr: Luke 18:1-8

Gospel: Luke 18:1-8

Jesus told his disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He said, “There was a judge in a certain town who neither feared God nor respected any human being. And a widow in that town used to come to him and say, ‘Render a just decision for me against my adversary.’ 

For a long time the judge was unwilling, but eventually he thought, ‘While it is true that I neither fear God nor respect any human being, because this widow keeps bothering me I shall deliver a just decision for her lest she finally come and strike me.’” The Lord said, “Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. 

Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them? I tell you, he will see to it that justice is done for them speedily. But when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”

Reflection:

After the death of Mother Teresa a book about her was published titled: Come be my light. It contained Mother Teresa’s letters regarding her struggle with her own faith. She said that she never experienced the presence of God since the founding of her religious congregation in 1948. 

Notwithstanding the emptiness that she felt Mother Teresa did not give up on her mission of helping the poor and the abandoned. She never gave up waking up 4:30 in the morning everyday to pray and converse with Jesus.   

What do you do when it seems that Jesus is deaf to your prayers? When you don’t see any visible signs of reply from Jesus? Do you give up and simply walk away from Him? Or you continue to hold on to Jesus, you continue to pray and hope that somehow you would see signs of His reply. 

In the Gospel Jesus told his disciples a parable about the necessity for them to pray always without becoming weary. He told them about a dishonest judge who neither feared God nor respected any human being. 

 There is also a woman who keeps on bothering the judge to give her justice.  Due to her persistence the judge finally listened to the woman and gave her justice. And the Lord said, "Pay attention to what the dishonest judge says. Will not God then secure the rights of his chosen ones who call out to him day and night? Will he be slow to answer them? 

God’s word is always alive that it speaks to us! What Jesus is saying is we need to be prayerful and we must not give up even if we don’t see signs of reply from Him. 

In our short journey in this world there will be disappointments, there will be failures and struggles. Yet these trials must not lead us to abandon our faith. We must continue to be persistent in our prayers, we must continue to trust in the Lord and we must continue to believe and have faith. – Marino J. Dasmarinas

Noong panahong iyon, isinaysay ni Jesus ang isang talinghaga upang ituro sa kanila na dapat silang manalanging lagi at huwag manghinawa. "Sa isang lungsod," wika niya, "may isang hukom na hindi natatakot sa Diyos at walang taong iginagalang. Sa lunsod ding yaon ay may isang babaing balo na punta nang punta sa hukom at humihingi ng katarungan. 

Tinanggihan siya ng hukom sa loob ng ilang panahon. Ngunit ng malaunan ay nasabi nito sa sarili: 'Bagamat hindi ako natatakot sa Diyos ni gumagalang kaninuman, igagawad ko na ang katarungang hinihingi ng babaing ito sapagkat lagi niya akong ginagambala-- baka pa ako mainis sa kapaparito niya.'" At sinabi ng Panginoon, "Narinig ninyo ang sinabi ng masamang hukom. 

Hindi ipagkakait ng Diyos ang katarungan sa kanyang mga hinirang na dumaraing sa kanya araw-gabi, bagama't tila nagtatagal iyon. Sinasabi ko sa inyo, agad niyang igagawad sa kanila ang katarungan. Ngunit pagdating ng Anak ng Tao sa daigdig na ito, may makikita kaya siyang mga taong nananalig sa kanya.?" 

Reflection for Friday November 11, Memorial of Saint Martin of Tours, Bishop: Luke 17:26-37

Gospel: Luke 17:26-37

Jesus said to his disciples: “As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be in the days of the Son of Man; they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage up to the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all. Similarly, as it was in the days of Lot: they were eating, drinking, buying, selling, planting, building; on the day when Lot left Sodom, fire and brimstone rained from the sky to destroy them all.  

So it will be on the day the Son of Man is revealed. On that day, someone who is on the housetop and whose belongings are in the house must not go down to get them, and likewise one in the field must not return to what was left behind. Remember the wife of Lot. 

Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses it will save it. I tell you, on that night there will be two people in one bed; one will be taken, the other left. And there will be two women grinding meal together; one will be taken, the other left.” They said to him in reply, “Where, Lord?” He said to them, “Where the body is, there also the vultures will gather.”

Reflection:

Are you afraid of the end times? Of course, we all are, Jesus mentions frightening scenarios in our gospel reading for this Friday. He mentions similar destructive occurrence like in the days of Noah where everyone on the face of the earth were wiped out except for Noah and his group. 

The same destruction happened in the place of Sodom and Gomorrah where the people there became very sinful. The people of Sodom and Gomorrah committed despicable sins such as sexual sins, thus earning the wrath of Yahweh.     

Our own respective end time will come to us; we cannot prevent it from happening for this is the nature of our life. But do we hold in our hands what kind of end time and life after our end time we would have? If it would be a hellish end time or a heavenly and peaceful end time? We don’t know. However, what Jesus mentioned to the disciples in the gospel is a fair reminder for all of us to straighten our lives. 

Let us leave behind everything that makes and influence us to sin while we still have the luxury of time. Let’s seriously reflect on this call of Jesus to repentance, sin has done nothing good to us. It made our lives miserable and if we would not leave it behind us it would further make our lives more miserable until it completely destroys us. - Marino J. Dasmarinas

Noong panahong iyon, sinabi nin Hesus sa kanyang mga alagad, "Ang pagparito ng Anak ng Tao ay matutulad sa kapanahunan ni Noe. Noon, ang mga tao'y nagsisikain at nagsisiinom, nag-aasawa, hanggang sa araw na sumakay si Noe sa daong. Dumating ang baha at namatay silang lahat. Gayon din noong panahon ni Lot -- ang mga tao'y nagsisikain at nagsisiinom, namimili at nagbibili, nagtatanim, at nagtatayo ng bahay. Ngunit nang araw na umalis si Lot sa Sodoma, umulan ng apoy at asupre at natupok silang lahat. Gayon din sa pagdating ng Anak ng Tao.  

"Sa araw na iyon, ang nasa bubungan ay huwag ng bumaba upang kunin ang kanyang mga ari-arian sa loob ng bahay. Ang nasa bukid ay huwag nang umuwi. Alalahanin ninyo ang nangyari sa asawa ni Lot. Ang sinumang magsikap na iligtas ang kanyang buhay ay mawawalan nito; ngunit ang sinumang mawalan ng kanyang buhay ay siyang makapagliligtas nito.  

Sinasabi ko sa inyo: may dalawang lalaking natutulog sa isang higaan sa gabing iyon; kukunin ang isa at iiwan ang isa. May dalawang babaing magkasamang gumigiling; kukunin ang isa at iiwan ang isa. May dalawang lalaking gumagawa sa bukid; kukunin ang isa at iiwan ang isa." "Saan po, Panginoon,?" tanong ng kanyang mga alagad. Sumagot siya, "Kung saan naroon ang mga bangkay, doon naman nagkakatipon ang mga buwitre."

Reflection for Thursday November 10, Memorial of Saint Leo the Great, Pope and Doctor of the Church: Luke 17:20-25

Gospel: Luke 17:20-25

Asked by the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God would come, Jesus said in reply, “The coming of the Kingdom of God cannot be observed, and no one will announce, ‘Look, here it is,’ or, ‘There it is.’ For behold, the Kingdom of God is among you.”  

Then he said to his disciples, “The days will come when you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man, but you will not see it. There will be those who will say to you, ‘Look, there he is,’ or ‘Look, here he is.’ Do not go off, do not run in pursuit. For just as lightning flashes and lights up the sky from one side to the other, so will the Son of Man be in his day. But first he must suffer greatly and be rejected by this generation.”

Reflection:

Could you say that you have the kingdom of God? You already have the kingdom of God in your heart if you have Jesus in your life. You already have the kingdom of God if you feel the love of Jesus in your heart. You already have the kingdom of God when you have peace and contentment in your heart. 

Many of us including our politicians today seek the kingdom of this world. We amass wealth even corrupted wealth. We amass vast properties to serve as our earthly kingdoms. But this kind kingdom will not last forever. We will leave behind everything eventually, we have to remember that we came into this world with nothing and we will leave this world with nothing.   

At what price are we willing to pay just to have this earthly kingdom? Are we willing to sell our souls to the devil just to have possession of this earthly kingdom? Let us wake up before it’s too late otherwise our greed for earthly kingdom would become our passage to hell.   

In our gospel for this Thursday Jesus was asked by the Pharisees when the Kingdom of God would come, Jesus said in reply, “The coming of the Kingdom of God cannot be observed, and no one will announce, ‘Look, here it is,’ or, ‘There it is.’ For behold, the Kingdom of God is among you (Luke 17:20-21). 

Indeed, the kingdom of God is within our midst already yet it cannot be physically seen and measured nor could it be bought by any amount of money.  This kingdom of God is planted into our hearts by Jesus Himself.

Noong panhong iyon, si Jesus ay tinanong ng mga Pariseo kung kailan itatatag ang kaharian ng Diyos. Sumagot siya, "Ang pagsisimula ng paghahari ng Diyos ay walang makikitang palatandaan. at wala ring magsasabing nagsisimula na roon o rini. Sapagkat ang totoo'y nagsimula nang maghari ang Diyos sa puso ng mga nananalig sa kanya." 

At sinabi niya sa mga alagad, "Darating ang panahong hahangarin ninyong ang isa sa mga araw ng Anak ng Tao, ngunit hindi ninyo makikita iyon. at may magsasabi sa inyo, "Naroon siya! o, 'Narini siya!' Huwag kayong pumunta upang siya'y hanapin. Sapagkat pagsapit ng takdang araw, ang Anak ng Tao'y darating na parang kidlat. Ngunit kailangan muna siyang magbata ng maraming hirap, at itakwil ng mga tao sa ngayon."

 

Reflection for Wednesday November 9, Feast of the Dedication of the Lateran Basilica in Rome: John 2:13-22

Gospel: John 2:13-22

Since the Passover of the Jews was near, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. He found in the temple area those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves, as well as the money-changers seated there. He made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, “Take these out of here, and stop making my Father’s house a marketplace.” 

His disciples recalled the words of Scripture, Zeal for your house will consume me. At this the Jews answered and said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?” Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and you will raise it up in three days?”  

But he was speaking about the temple of his Body. Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they came to believe the Scripture and the word Jesus had spoken.

Reflection:

What do you do when you go to church to pray or for Holy Mass? Do you always go there so that you could feel its solemn atmosphere, so that you could have a personal encounter with Jesus? 

The church is always our place of worship and this is our safe refuge whenever we are burdened by life’s challenges. It is also here where we get to have a personal encounter with Jesus before, during and after the celebration of the Holy Mass. 

Do we still observe the proper respect and discipline when we are at church? Do we still dip our finger in the holy water font, make the sign of the cross and genuflect with our eyes fixed on the tabernacle before we officially enter the church and before we go outside of the church?    

In our gospel we read about Jesus who went to the temple, to His dismay he found the temple in disarray. For they made the temple of worship to a temple of commerce. The people who were supposed to worship were there to do business and other things not related with worship for God. Therefore to create order and to restore the sanctity of the temple Jesus angrily drove out all those who were corrupting the temple.    

This is a good reminder for all of us when we are at church for Holy Mass or to pray. We go to church to encounter, to worship and to give glory and honor to Jesus. The church is not a business office where wheeling and dealing occurs. 

When we go to church to pray or for Holy Mass let us go there with our focus on Jesus. So that when we go out of the church we carry with us this renewed strength and hope that will energize us as we once again face our life’s challenges. - Marino J. Dasmarinas

Malapit na ang Paskuwa ng mga Judio, kaya’t pumunta si Hesus sa Jerusalem. Nakita niya sa templo ang mga nagbibili ng mga baka, mga tupa, at mga kalapati, at ang namamalit ng salapi. Gumawa siya ng isang panghagupit na lubid at ipinagtabuyang palabas ang mangangalakal, pati mga baka at tupa. 

Isinabog niya ang salapi ng mga namamalit at pinagtataob ang kanilang mga hapag. Sinabi niya sa mga nagbibili ng kalapati, “Alisin ninyo rito ang mga iyan! Huwag ninyong gawing palengke ang bahay ng aking Ama!” Naalala ng kanyang mga alagad na sinasabi sa Kasulatan, “Ang aking malasakit sa iyong bahay ay parang apoy na nag-aalab sa puso ko.” 

Dahil dito’y tinanong siya ng mga Judio, “Anong tanda ang maibibigay mo upang patunayang may karapatan kang gawin ito?” Tumugon si Hesus, “Gibain ninyo ang templong ito at muli kong itatayo sa loob ng tatlong araw.” Sinabi ng mga Judio, “Apatnapu’t anim na taon na ginawa ang templong ito, at itatayo mo sa loob lamang ng tatlong araw?” 

Ngunit ang templong tinutukoy ni Hesus ay ang kanyang katawan. Kaya’t nang siya’y muling mabuhay, naalaala ng kanyang mga alagad na sinabi niya ito; at naniwala sila sa Kasulatan at sa mga sinabi ni Hesus.

Reflection for November 8, Tuesday of the Thirty-second Week in Ordinary Time: Luke 17:7-10

Gospel: Luke 17:7-10

Jesus said to the Apostles: "Who among you would say to your servant who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, 'Come here immediately and take your place at table'? Would he not rather say to him, 'Prepare something for me to eat. Put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink.  

You may eat and drink when I am finished'? Is he grateful to that servant because he did what was commanded? So should it be with you. When you have done all you have been commanded, say, 'We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.'"

Reflection:

Do you sometimes question the existence of God?

Once in a while we would go through episodes in our lives that would force us to question if there is really God. And because we were taught that there is a God we will say, yes there is God. But then again at the back of our minds we will ask again and again and again. If there’s a God, why does suffering exist? 

We don’t know the answers to this very valid question because there are times that God seems to be deaf to our longing for Him. But who are we to question the majesty of God? We are but a speck in this world, mere servants and finite humans that easily gives up on God whenever we are faced by sufferings.  

In our lowliness before this infinite and all powerful God, it’s also valid for us to ask Him questions. It’s also valid for us to beg for answers. Why all these sufferings? Let us ask God to answer these valid questions of ours for the reason that even servants have rights too. 

despite all of these sufferings we who are alive must not lose faith. We must continue to hold on to this God who gave us life and faith. Otherwise if we would lose faith, to where would we go? We embrace evil and allow the Devil to take control of our lives? Of course not! No one of us would want to be controlled by the Devil.  

But the Devil is real and it’s always there waiting for the right time take control of us. However the devil is nothing compared to the power of Jesus. We therefore have to take seriously the teachings of Jesus like how a good servant takes seriously the teachings of his Lord.  – Marino J. Dasmarinas

Pagkagaling niya sa bukid, sasabihin ba ninyo sa kanya, 'Halika at nang makakain ka na'? Hindi! Sa halip ay ganito ang sinasabi ninyo: 'Ipaghanda mo ako ng hapunan; magbihis ka, at silbihan mo ako habang ako'y kumakain.  

Kumain ka pagkakain ko.' Pinasasalamatan ba ang alipin dahil sa ginawa niya ang iniutos sa kanya? Gayon din naman kayo; kapag nagawa na ninyo ang lahat ng iniuutos sa inyo, sabihin ninyo, 'Kami'y mga aliping walang kabuluhan; tumupad lamang kami sa aming tungkulin.'"

Reflection for November 7, Monday of the Thirty-second Week in Ordinary Time: Luke 17:1-6

Gospel: Luke 17:1-6

Jesus said to his disciples, “Things that cause sin will inevitably occur, but woe to the one through whom they occur. It would be better for him if a millstone were put around his neck and he be thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. Be on your guard! If your brother sins, rebuke him; and if he repents, forgive him. And if he wrongs you seven times in one day and returns to you seven times saying, ‘I am sorry, you should forgive him.”  

And the Apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” The Lord replied, “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

Reflection:

Why do we sin? We sin because we allow sin to envelope us and we sin because our faith in Jesus is weak it is easily defeated by temptations. The devil is like a drone that always hovers above us it sees us and it detects if our faith in Jesus is weak. The moment that the devil finds out that our faith is weak he quickly sends his slaves to entice us with sinfulness.  

What is the antidote to sin? Very simple, yet we often neglect to harness this antidote called faith in Jesus. This is what defeats the devil and sin, the moment we ask Jesus to strengthen our faith He will surely oblige our request. But do we humbly and prayerfully ask Jesus to strengthen our faith? Are we faithful Holy Mass goers? Do we read our bible? Do we pray the Holy Rosary?  

If we want to have an increase of faith we should not only ask Jesus we should also show Jesus that we are deserving of this faith. The moment we do so we would notice a significant improvement in our faith life and in our journey with Jesus in this world.  

Faith is a gift but at the same time faith is also given by Jesus to those who ask for it. And to those who are willing to walk away from whatever that makes him/her sin. And one testament of a person who deserves the gift of faith is someone who strives to know more about Jesus. And someone who endeavors to share his/her faith about Jesus.  

Do you want to have an increase of faith? Try to know more about the life of Jesus, don’t forget to share what you know about Jesus and have the courage to permanently walk away from anything that make us sin.  – Marino J. Dasmarinas

Noong panahong iyon, sinabi ni Hesus sa kanyang mga alagad, “Hindi mawawala kahit kailan ang mga sanhi ng pagkakasala; ngunit nakapangingilabot ang sasapitin ng taong panggagalingan nito! Mabuti pa sa kanya ang bitinan ng isang malaking gilingang-bato sa leeg at itapon sa dagat, kaysa maging sanhi ng pagkakasala ng isa sa maliliit na ito. Kaya’t mag-ingat kayo!  

“Kung magkasala ang kapatid mo, pagsabihan mo, at kung siya’y magsisi, patawarin mo. Kung makapito siyang magkasala sa iyo sa maghapon, at makapito ring lumapit sa iyo at magsabing, ‘Nagsisisi ako,’ patawarin mo.”  

Sinabi ng mga apostol sa Panginoon, “Dagdagan po ninyo ang aming pananalig sa Diyos!” Tumugon ang Panginoon, “Kung maging sinlaki man lamang ng butil ng mustasa ang inyong pananalig sa Diyos, masasabi ninyo sa puno ng sikomorong ito, ‘Mabunot ka, at matanim sa dagat!’ at tatalima ito sa inyo.” 

Reflection for Sunday November 6, 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time: Luke 20:27-38

Gospel: Luke 20:27-38

Some Sadducees, those who deny that there is a resurrection, came forward and put this question to Jesus, saying, “Teacher, Moses wrote for us, If someone's brother dies leaving a wife but no child, his brother must take the wife and raise up descendants for his brother.

Now there were seven brothers; the first married a woman but died childless. Then the second and the third married her, and likewise all the seven died childless. Finally the woman also died. Now at the resurrection whose wife will that woman be? For all seven had been married to her.” Jesus said to them, “The children of this age marry and remarry; but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.

They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise. That the dead will rise even Moses made known in the passage about the bush, when he called out ‘Lord,’ the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob; and he is not God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.

Reflection:

Do you believe that there is life after this present life? 

Mr. X was an unbeliever of the afterlife he always splurges on sinful and other worldly activities. His principle was to make the most of his present life for there will be no more after his present life. 

He eventually died and contrary to his belief he saw heaven and hell. And he chose to go to the pearly gated heaven being watched by a bearded fellow wearing a long white robe who told him that he is not welcome. After which he was suddenly snatched and brought to hell by a grim looking beast. 

The gospel for this Sunday speaks about the Sadducees who deny that there is an afterlife. So, they’ve asked Jesus about a woman who married seven brothers. And they told Jesus: To whose wife would she be in the resurrection? 

Jesus said to them, "The children of this age marry and remarry; but those who are deemed worthy to attain to the coming age and to the resurrection of the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. They can no longer die, for they are like angels; and they are the children of God because they are the ones who will rise. (Luke 20:34-36) 

In the resurrection the situation will be different, while here on earth we marry and procreate to sustain the inventory of life. In heaven relationships will not be like that. There will be no more marriage  for we shall be like angels who will only worship God and no one else. 

Our faith has taught us that life is not limited to this world alone, after our death we shall be entering a new doorway of endless blissfulness wherein there shall be no more hardships and problems. But the sad reality is this: Not everyone of us will be able to go there. Some of us who are not leading our lives according to the desire of God will be snatched by the grim looking beast as well. 

So what must we do to experience resurrection? We must live our lives according to the will of God. We therefore have to follow the teachings of Jesus and the church. Hence, we always have to do good, be forgiving,  have a heart for the poor, always impart love even to those who do not deserve to be loved.

Noong panahong iyon, may ilang Saduseo na lumapit kay Hesus. Ang Saduseo’y hindi naniniwala na muling bubuhayin ang mga patay. “Guro,” anila, “naglagda po si Moises ng ganitong batas para sa amin: ‘Kung mamatay ang isang lalaki at maiwang walang anak ang kanyang asawa, ang kapatid na lalaki’y dapat pakasal sa balo upang magkaanak sila para sa namatay.’

May pitong magkakapatid na lalaki. Nag-asawa ang panganay, at namatay na walang anak. Napakasal sa balo ang pangalawa, at namatay. Gayun din ang nangyari sa pangatlo hanggang sa pampito: isa-isang napangasawa ng babae at pawang namatay na walang anak. Sa kahuli-huliha’y namatay naman ang babae. Sa muling pagkabuhay, sino po sa pito ang kikilalaning asawa niya yamang napangasawa niya silang lahat?”

Sumagot si Hesus, “Sa buhay na ito, ang mga lalaki at mga babae’y nag-aasawa, ngunit ang mga lalaki’t babaing karapat-dapat na muling buhayin para sa kabilang buhay ay hindi na mag-aasawa. Hindi na sila mamamatay sapagkat matutulad sila sa mga anghel. At sila’y mga anak ng Diyos yamang muli silang binuhay.

Maging si Moises ay nagpapatunay na muling binubuhay ang mga patay. Sapagkat sa kanyang kasaysayan hinggil sa nagliliyab na mababang punongkahoy, ang Panginoon ay tinawag niyang ‘Diyos ni Abraham, Diyos ni Isaac at Diyos ni Jacob.’ Ngunit ang Diyos ay hindi Diyos ng mga patay kundi ng mga buhay – sa kanya’y buhay ang lahat.” Sinabi ng ilan sa mga eskriba, “Magaling ang sagot ninyo, Guro!” At wala nang nangahas na magtanong sa kanya ng anuman.
