Reflection for December 10 Wednesday of the Second Week of Advent: Matthew 11:28-30

Gospel: Matthew 11:28-30
Jesus said: “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

Reflection:
The story is told of a father who was suddenly rendered out of a job. Anxiety filled his heart as he wondered how he would earn enough to feed his family. In his moment of uncertainty, he turned to the Lord in prayer, entrusting his fears and needs to Him.

After only three days, a neighbor who knew about his situation approached him and asked if he would be willing to work as a family driver. Without hesitation, he said yes. Through faith and trust, a way forward was opened.

Many of us find ourselves in similar moments. We go through difficult seasons in our lives—times marked by sickness, joblessness, fear, or heavy worry. In such moments, our hearts long for peace. We seek relief. We desire rest. And sometimes, we wonder where to turn.

Jesus speaks to us in the Gospel with a tender and loving invitation:

“Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

Why does Jesus call us to come to Him? It is because He knows the weight we carry. He sees our silent struggles, our hidden tears, and the burdens that press heavily upon our hearts. Jesus does not promise a life without trials, but He promises to walk with us through them. He offers to help us carry whatever pains, worries, and sufferings we are facing right now.

When we respond to this call of Jesus, we begin to experience a quiet but powerful change. The burdens we carry do not instantly disappear, but they become lighter because we no longer carry them alone. With Jesus beside us, hope is rekindled, faith is strengthened, and our hearts find renewed peace.

So let us not delay. Let us respond to the loving invitation of the Lord. When we do, we will discover that there is so much to gain and nothing to lose. If we open our hearts to Him, we will witness how grace unfolds in our lives in ways we could never have imagined.

The question now rests in our hearts: in the midst of our struggles and weariness, are we willing to place our trust in the Lord, surrender our burdens to Him, and truly come to Jesus today? — Marino J. Dasmarinas
