Gospel: Matthew 5:1-12a
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain, and after he had sat
down, his disciples came to him. He began to teach them, saying:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are they who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the land.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness,
for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you
and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me.
Rejoice and be glad,
for your reward will be great in heaven.”

Reflection:
What are these beatitudes all about? The beatitudes are guidelines for
living that Jesus gave to His disciples. The beatitudes deal also with humility
and utter dependence upon the goodness of God. Do you live humility and do you
always depend on the goodness of God?
As we remember the saints today, we are being invited to take a closer
look at their lives for they lived it with humility and dependence on the Lord.
They did what they had to do but at the end of the day they humbly submitted
everything to the will of God.
The saints did not do it their way, they went through the way of God thus
they embraced the beatitudes. For example, why is the poor in spirit blessed?
They are blessed because they know that their knowledge about God is something
that they should not be proud of. They acknowledge their nothingness before God
thus God continuously fills them. – Marino J. Dasmarinas
