Reflection for Monday June 29 Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles: Matthew 16:13-19

Gospel: Matthew 16:13-19
When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.

And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Reflection:
Do we have a best friend forever (BFF)?

When we become best friends with someone, we build a relationship that is deeper than ordinary friendship. We gladly spend time together, share our joys and struggles, entrust our deepest concerns, and confide the secrets of our hearts. A true best friend is someone we love, trust, and remain close to through every season of life.

In the same way, Saint Peter shared a unique friendship with Jesus. More than any of the other apostles, Peter spent much of his time with the Lord, listening to His words, witnessing His miracles, and learning from His example.

Although Peter denied Jesus three times during His Passion, Jesus did not abandon him. Instead, in His boundless mercy and love, Jesus forgave Peter, restored him, and entrusted to him the care and leadership of His Church. Peter's failure did not have the final word—Jesus' grace did.

The same invitation is extended to us today. Jesus desires more than our admiration; He longs for a close and personal friendship with each one of us. As we grow in our relationship with Him, He strengthens our faith, transforms our hearts, and enables us to receive the gifts He lovingly desires to give us.

If we desire the gift of a deeper faith that can withstand life's trials, let us begin by becoming closer friends with Jesus. Let us spend time reading and reflecting on the Holy Bible each day, faithfully participating in the Holy Mass, speaking with Him in prayer, and living according to His teachings. The more we walk with Jesus, the more we will discover His unfailing love, experience His transforming grace, and grow in unwavering faith.

Today, Jesus lovingly asks each of us, "Will you be My close friend?" Will we make time for Him each day, trust Him with every part of our lives, and follow Him wholeheartedly so that our friendship with Him may grow deeper and bear fruit for His glory?– Marino J. Dasmarinas
