1Reflection for Sunday April 18, Third Sunday of Easter: Luke 24:35-48

Gospel: Luke 24:35-48

The two disciples recounted what had taken place on the way, and how Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of bread.  

While they were still speaking about this, he stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.” But they were startled and terrified and thought that they were seeing a ghost. Then he said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do questions arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” And as he said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While they were still incredulous for joy and were amazed, he asked them, “Have you anything here to eat?” they gave him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front of them.  

He said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the law of Moses and in the prophets and psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures. And he said to them, “Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance, for the forgiveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.  You are witnesses of these things.”

Reflection:

The story is told about a compassionate woman who would always go to a nearby poor community to give food to those who are hungry. The poor whom she had helped would ask her; “Why are you doing this to us?” The woman would reply: “I want to share the love and compassion of Jesus to you.”  

How would we know that we are witnessing for the risen Christ? We hunger to do the things that Jesus did when He walked for three years in this world. For example, we saw a poor man begging for food. And we felt compassion for that man which led us to give him food to alleviate his hunger. Or whenever we see a person in need we always feel the drive to help.  

If we feel these emotions in our hearts we are in fact already witnessing for the Risen Christ. The Lord is manifesting Himself through us and we become the living and breathing witness that Jesus has indeed risen!  

Why are we witnessing for Jesus? We witness for Jesus because we want others to know  Jesus as we know Jesus. We witness for the Lord because we want Jesus to make a positive impact in their lives as what Jesus did for our own lives. Through our witness others would know Jesus and they will feel Jesus presence and love through us.  

In the gospel, the two disciples recalled to their fellow disciples Jesus’ manifestation to them in the breaking of the bread. When you break bread or share your food with the poor and  hungry, you are doing acts of mercy and compassion. When you break bread or share your food with the hungry you witness for Jesus and you become the face of Jesus for them. -  Marino J. Dasmarinas
